COLONEL MULLER IS COMMANDANT (Continued From Page 1) HORNED FROGS COME SATURDAY (Continued From Page 1) urged upon the war department. Col. Muller saw service in France with the 322nd Infantry of the Wild- cat Division and made a good record there, winning rapid promotion. = Fol- lowing his return from France he was stationed at Camp Bowie and from that place he comes here. Before tak- ing up his work at Camp Bowie he and Mrs. Muller visited at College for a few days and were shofn many social courtesies. ————l ee ef Pre NEW CROP PESTS DESCRIBED BY BILSING very small, he said, and several may bore into the peach with it hardly be- ing noticeable. The infested area now extends only along the Pennsylvania railway from Washington to New York, he stated, but the ravages of the pest promise to become serious in the near future. The Japanese flower beetle looks something like the common June bug, Prof. Bilsing said, and is an enemy of all grass and forage crops. The state of New Jersey is now trying to ex- terminate this pest. Several nationally prominent men appeared before the convention, Prof. Bilsing reports, among whom were Dr. David Jayne Hill, former ambassador to Germany, Sir Edward Babbington Smith who spoke on “Reconstruction in England”, and Charles Spergler, representative of the new Czecho- Slovak republic. Dr. Welch of Johns Hopkins Uni- versity presented a mass of interest- ing statistics that he had gathered concerning the health of the United States soldiers in the home camps and in Europe. —_— otf SON OF FORMER INSTRUCTOR DIES Telegrams announcing the death in New Orleans last Saturday of Henry Hudson, son of Prof. C. H. Hudson, former head of the English depart- - ment here, have been received by friends of the family on the Campus. Cancer of the stomach, from which he had been suffering for a long time, brought about his death. EE RERE Lamtcs ca RN MINNESOTA SEEDMEN TO EN- TER TEXAS. C. A. Burnham, sales manager of Northrup, King and Co., of Minne- apolis, one of the large seed firms of this country, was here yesterday in conference with A. H. Leidigh, agronomist of the Experiment Sta- tion, on seed matters and announced that his firm was preparing to enter this state this season and would put on a large force of salesmen in Texas. Mr. Burnham who is well posted on the seed laws of the several states, also gave Mr. Leidigh some pointeis on pure seed laws which may be used to advantage in the framing of a seed law for Texas. with Allen Academy Monday showed, and all of the men are working hard in hopes of getting in the game Sat- urday. It is not certain yet just who will be started, but aside from those mentioned above Williams, Hartung, Keene, Pierce or Hopkins may get in at the first. Others no doubt will get their chance during the game and they can expect an enthusiastic greeting from the loyal cadets if they show winning form. The game will be called at the gym- nasium promptly at 8 o’clock. Ad- mission price is 50 cents, coupon books | being accepted. Other Schools Have Prospects There is considerable optimism in the athletic camps of the state over the prospects for the coming season. This is partly due to the fact that things locked very gloomy until the S.A. T.C. was demobilized. © But the colleges are waking up to things ath- letic now, it is reported from. all quarters, and the students are getting behind the sport more strongly than ever before. The men returning from the army have been trained in sports and they want to see real live, clean athletics. Also they want to see real action, and the teams are preparing to give it to them. Reports of bright prospects in the way of strong teams also are general. Aside from T.C.U., as mentioned above, it is said Coach Henderson of the Longhorns is all smiles over the way his team is showing up. Pros- pects at State were dark for a while at the first of the year but Devinney and Captain Greer have returned from the navy and will be the mainstays of a team that is expected to equal those that Texas has been in the habit of turning out. Rice Owls a ‘New Lot Rice Institute reports a team mostly of new men but all have had experi- ence, and according to Houston papers will put up a strong game. Bell and Garlach especially, are expected to give a good account of themselves. T. CU. will come to A. and M. from Houston where they are billed for two games with Rice Institute on Thurs- day and Friday. These games may give some indication of the relative strength of Rice and A. and M.; the latter two institutions will not meet this season, however. Simmons College reports simply that its team is out for state honors. Baylor, S.M.U. and Southwestern all expect to develop strong teams, South- western having shown up fairly well in its early season-game with Texas, although defeated 25 to 12. Enough is known to predict that the basketball season for 1919 will be of unusual interest and the A. and M. rooters are expected to be out in force Saturday to send their team off to a good start.
