THE BATTALION Wednesday, March 20, 2002 Ag natters host Iowa By Dallas Shipp THE BATTALION The No. 24 Texas A&M women’s ten nis team will try to continue its home court dominance as it prepares for Wednesday's match against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The match is the first between the two schools. It has been an up-and-down year for the Hawkeyes, who enter the match with a 4-7 record coming off a tough loss to Ohio State on Sunday. “We have played a lot of ranked teams this year,” said Iowa head coach Paul Wardlaw. “It has been a tough schedule, but we are looking forward to playing [A&M].” Wardlaw said an influence in planning the match was to allow sophomore Cassie Haas to return to A&M, where she began her collegiate career. “[Haas] transferred to Iowa to be clos er to her family,” Wardlaw said. “She loved it here, and we wanted to give her an opportunity to come back and play here again.” A&M head coach Bobby Kleinecke is also excited for Haas to return and play another match in College Station. “Cassie is a great player” Kleinecke said. “She is a fighter and we hated to see her leave and go back home. I have noth ing but good things to say about her.” The match will also be an opportunity for the Hawkeyes to play another quality opponent in a non-conference matchup. The Aggies (12-2, 3-0) are coming off a big win over No. 26 Miami on Sunday, in which the entire team played well. Senior Olivia Karlikova is looking to rebound after a tough loss to Staci Stevens of Miami on Sunday. “Olivia has really picked up her play,” See Hawkeyes on page 7 Aggies fight back to beat Bearkats Schindewolf’s home run boosts No. 17 Ags past Sam Houston St. By Doug Puentes THE BATTALION The No. 17 Texas A&M baseball team found a way to break its four-game losing streak on Tuesday as it came from behind to beat the Sam Houston State Bearkats, 5- 2, in front of 4,653 fans at Olsen Field. Sophomore Erik Schindewolf’s pinch hit, three-run home run in the seventh inning capped off a four-run rally that took the Aggies (18-9) from a 2-1 deficit to a victory over the Bearkats (10-13). “I told the guys before the game that if things didn’t work out good in the first or second inning, just keep playing it out,” said A&M head coach Mark Johnson. “It was bleak for a while but the big at bat was [sen ior shortstop] Ryan Wardinsky. “We had two outs and nothing going on, absolutely zero life in the game. He fought and got a base hit which appeared to be insignificant but it kept the inning going.” Wardinsky gave the Aggies a breath of life in the seventh when his two-out single kept the inning alive. With two strikes, Wardinsky fouled off three pitches before slapping a single to left field. Bearkat pitcher Ryan Herrera, who kept the Aggies in check for the first six innings, helped A&M’s cause by hitting senior first baseman Neal Stephenson with a pitch. Senior second baseman Ty Gamer tied the game at two when his single scored Wardinsky, setting the stage for Schindewolf’s heroics. Schindewolf sent a 1-1 pitch from Bearkat pitcher Dustin Craig, who relieved Herrera after Gamer’s hit, over the right field wall to give the Aggies the lead for good. “I was just trying to hit the ball back up the middle and get a short swing on it,” Schindewolf said. “I didn’t know if it was going out or not, but it just snuck out.” Sophomore Matt Famum got the win for the Aggies, capping off a good per formance by the A&M pitchers. Famum (4-2) allowed only one hit and struck out six in three innings of work. For the game, Famum, along with soph omores Brian Finch and Ryan Warpinski, struck out 14 Bearkats and allowed only six hits. Softball heads south for game with Cougars By Micala Proesch THE BATTALION The No. 20 Texas A&M softball team is headed for Houston today to take on the University of Houston Cougars. The Aggies are hoping to secure another victory on the road and pre pare themselves for a homestand against No. 6 Oklahoma this weekend. The Aggies (23-6) are rounding out a six-game road trip that included a stop at the San Diego State Tournament last weekend where they posted a 3-1 record, losing only to San Diego State in the final game of the tournament. All three Aggie pitchers collected impressive wins last weekend, high lighted by sophomore Jessica Slataper’s sixth shutout of the sea son which improved her record to 11-4. Junior Lindsey Rippee (7-1) threw a two-hit shutout to overcome the University of San Diego. Sophomore Lindsay Wilhelmson (5-1) recorded a career-high 10 strike outs en route to a 6-3 victory on the first day of the tournament. In the loss to San Diego State, the Aggies faltered early and never regained their footing. “We gave up a couple hits, and three runs in the first inning,” said A&M head coach Jo Evans. “And while we got a couple rallies going, we struggled and couldn’t quite come back.” Despite the loss, the Aggies remain confident, boasting their high est ranking of the season and getting See Cougars on page 7 /It m 7\ IS Tt.CC 0 p-l 0 0 H 0 p ( T) 0 N < ol CQ BC wants to be your college of choice.
