Aggies face Red Raiders in round one A&M still in search of first Big 12 tournament victory By True Brown THE BATTALION For the Texas A&M men’s basketball team, this season has been one to forget. Boosted preseason expectations and a 5-1 start had Aggie fans talking in November about a berth in the NIT tour nament or even the NCAAs. A loss to Miami on Dec. 9 brought A&M back to earth, and it won only one game in the next 40 days while its record plummeted to 6-11. There is still something the Aggies can take from this season, however, when they play Texas Tech today at 2:20 p.m. in round one of the Big 12 tournament. A win over the Red Raiders (21-7, 10-6 Big 12) would give A&M its first- ever win in a Big 12 tournament game. The Aggies (9-21, 3-13) have not won a conference tournament game since reaching the championship game of the Southwest Conference Classic in 1994. That mark includes an 0-5 showing in the Big 12 tournament. “The team that we have on the floor, there are moments we play as good as any team in the Big 12,” said A&M head coach Melvin Watkins. “We just don’t seem to be consistent. Some of it is that fatinue is probably setting in a little bit, and so we’ve got to try to lift our spirits in the tournament. ’ The Red Raiders have had A&M’s number this season, sweeping A&M by winning in College Station and Lubbock. Tech edged the Aggies by three points Jan. 9 at Reed Arena, a game that was close from tipoff to the final buzzer, complete with 16 lead changes. “You look at the tapes from that game and see some shortcomings,” Watkins said. “I felt like it wasn’t so much what Tech did but what we did to ourselves. If we can clean those things up and do the good things again, we can feel like we’ve got a chance to win this ball game.” Sophomore center Andy Slocum broke his hand on Jan. 9 and missed more than a month of play but has been hot recently. Since returning, Slocum has averaged 8.7 rebounds per game, including a double-double against Nebraska on Feb. 20. (AP) — A disheartened Roy Williams came home one night and told his wife it was time to start thinking about getting out of college coaching. He was tired of the recruiting rat race, weary of megalomani- cal high school stars, sick of greedy parents interested not so much in an education for their kids as getting them to the NBA. “I got home one night and told Wanda maybe it was time to take another look at some of those other job offers,” said the popular University of Kansas coach. But then came salvation in the form of three kids named Drew Gooden. Kirk Hinrich and Nick Collison. Suddenly, his job fun again, Williams was reinvigorated and ready to give all his energy to the challenge. Those three had reminded him that there really were lov ing parents and good kids out there, and some of them could even play lights-out basketball. All three signed with the Jayhawks. Now, three years later, they are the key components of what is probably Williams’ best team in 14 years at Kansas. The Jayhawks are ranked No. 1 in the nation, coming off the first unbeaten conference season in Big 12 history (16-0) and certain to be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tourney. And Williams is The Associated Press Big 12 coach of the year. In balloting by 24 media representatives, he edged out Bob Knight, the former Indiana coach who in just one season has turned Texas Tech (21 -7, 10-6 Big 12) from a loser into a winner. “I’m extremely flattered,” said Williams, whose Jayhawks are 27-2 overall heading into See Coach on page 3B (§|f The City of College Station.
