The Spurs, whose winning streak began Feb. 29, matched the 16-0 record set by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1972. Nine other teams have had undefeat ed months of 12 to 15 victories. David Robinson scored 22 points, Avery Johnson had 20, Sean Elliott had 17 points, 10 re bounds and five assists and Charles Smith scored 12 points. Kevin Johnson scored 19, Michael Finley had 16 and Dan ny Manning came off the bench to add 14 for Phoenix, which had its three-game winning streak snapped. The Suns had a rough first quarter, going just 5-of-22 from the field, and trailed 25-16 head ing into the second period. Charles Barkley was l-of-9 in the quarter. San Antonio broke the game open early in the fourth quarter as Avery Johnson had three straight layups for a 78-65 lead. Robinson’s has 13,998 career points. If he reaches 14,000, he’ll become the 89th NBA player to hit the mark. Spurs guard Dell Demps was placed on the injured list due to back spasms. Forward Carl Her rera returned to active status. He had been on the list since March 22 due to gastroenteritis. Among the other teams to go undefeated in a month are the Boston Celtics (15-0 in Decem ber, 1959), Chicago Bulls (14-0, Jan. ’96), Lakers (14-0, Nov.’71), Phoenix Suns (14-0 Dec. ’92), Houston Rockets (14-0, Nov. 93) and New York Knicks (14-0, March, ’94). One team had a 13- 0 month and two had 12-0 months. Goliath pounds David in Women’s National Championship game Tennessee’s size routed Georgia’s speed in the title tilt, 83-65 CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Tennessee was bigger and stronger, Georgia was quicker. In this case, bigger was better. Tennessee dominated inside and got some inspired defense from Latina Davis in beating Southeastern Conference rival Georgia 83-65 Sunday night to win its fourth NCAA champi onship. Tennessee now has twice as many national titles as any other school in 15 years of NCAA play. The Lady Vols won their previous champi onships in 1987, 1989 and 1991 — all under current coach Pat Summitt. Tennessee’s players donned the traditional championship caps and pranced around the court in celebration. Summitt, wearing a burnt orange pantsuit, watched calmly from the sidelines and chatted with a television reporter. Tennessee’s Michelle Marciniak, who had 10 points, five assists and two steals, was named the outstanding player in the Final Four. She scored 21 in a semifinal victo ry over defending champion Connecticut on Friday night. Abby Conklin helped with some timely 3-point shooting for the Lady Vols, who had lost at Georgia 77-71 during the season. Tennessee outre- bounded Georgia 63-30 in that game and enjoyed another big edge on the boards Sunday night, this time 54-39. That total included 21 offen sive rebounds, which led to 17 second-chance points. Davis, Tennessee’s leading scorer in the tournament, stood out with her defense by shutting down Georgia’s All- America guard, Saudia Roundtree. Roundtree had promised coach Andy Landers a national championship when she signed with Georgia out of junior col lege two years ago, but she couldn’t make it happen. The 5-foot-7 senior, who had 63 points in her two previous tournament games, rarely was able to get Georgia into its deadly transition game and scored only eight points on 3- for-14 shooting. She went scoreless in the second half. Freshman Chamique Hold- sclaw led Tennessee (32-4) with 16 points and 14 re bounds. Tiffani Johnson also scored 16 for the Lady Vols and Conklin added 14, includ ing four 3-pointers. Pashen Thompson had 12 points and 11 rebounds. La’Keshia Frett led Georgia (28-5) with 25 points but had only seven in the second half. Tracy Henderson scored 16. Ahead 42-37 at halftime de spite shooting only 43 percent, Tennessee opened the second half with a 15-5 run to in crease its lead to 57-41. Conklin hit two 3-pointers during that stretch and four other Tennessee players scored as the Lady Vols took control. ,1.102, No. 1 Da By Lily Aguilar The Battalion Maj. Gen.
