James Stewart In “SHANNADOAH” Competition hot in Aggie camp The Texas Aggies finished off their seventh workout of the spring Thursday with competition hot and heavy for the 22 start ing positions. Hardly a day has passed with out some changes being made in the maroon, or first two units, offense and defense, with the depth chart at the end of first week including at least eight members of last year’s freshman team. Skip Kuehn, junior college transfer from Ranger Junior Col lege and Butch Kamps, a maroon offensive tackle, at the start of the week are both nursing knee injuries, and may not return to full contact status until after the team breaks for the Easter holi days next week. Kuehn was the number one center before his in jury. Linebacker Dennis Carruth suf fered a broken leg near the end of Thursday’s workout and was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital. The big bone in his leg was re portedly the one broken. The current maroon team after Thursday’s workout includes, of fense—split end, Johnny Gardner and Billy Joe Polasek; right tackle, Ralph Sacra and Brooks Dough tie; right guard, Leonard Forey and Mike Park; center, Robert Gerasimowicz and Mike Mercer; left guard, Marshall Her- klotz and Todd Christopher; left tackle, Ted Smith and Buster Calloway; tight end, Homer May and Mike Bruton. Defense—left end, Max Bird; left tackle, Bud Trammell and Barb Hinnant; middle guard, Van Odom and Barb Hinnant; right tackle, James Dubcak; right end, Kent Finley; linebackers, Grady Hoer- man, Steve Luebbehusen, Dennis Carruth; left cornerback, Ed Ebrom; right corner-back, Robert Murski and Bland Smith; strong safety, David Hoot; free safety, Lee Hitt and Clifford Thomas. AND THEY’RE OFF! Four intramural tracksters bid for first place honors in one oi the intramural track events being held this week on Kyle field. (Photo by Mike Rice) Aggies dominate hatting stats By CLIFFORD BROYLES Battalion Sports Editor Six members of the Texas Ag gies are listed in the latest South west Conference baseball statis tics released by the league this week, but at least three of the team’s leading hitters are miss ing. The list has two requirements that are hurting the Aggies. Dave Elmendorf, who has yet to play a conference game since his eye injury; and Gene Reinarz, who has batted only 11 times. Both lack the minimum 12 at bats for the list. Carroll Lilly is hitting only .238 in league play, but the list includes only .300 hitters. But the Aggie second baseman has a .414 season average with 19 hits in 37 bats against non-league opponents. R. J. Englert leads the Aggies with a .429 with 12 hits in 38 tries including eight of 13 in the Rice series. That’s good for fourth place behind leader Johnny Dodg- en of Baylor at .478. Billy Hodge, A&M’s All-SWC catcher who is expected to return to full time duty behind the plate this weekend, is sixth with a .417 and Chris Sans eighth at .391. Then it’s Butch Ghutzman, 12 at .348. Jimmy Hacker and Larry Smith are tied for 14 with .333 marks. The Aggies two ace pitchers, Bruce Katt and Paul Czerwinski, rank second and fourth. Katt has a 2-0 record with 2.77 era and Czerwinski, 1-0 for a 1.50 era. SWC standing: Golf s Team W L Pet.
