Galley Jr. was sen tenced by a military jury Wed nesday to life imprisonment at hard labor for the murder of at least 22 Vietnamese men, women and children at My L a i three years ago. The Western White House re ported President Nixon is receiv ing thousands of telegrams, run ning 100 to 1 against the convic tion and urging clemency. Asked if it was in Nixon’s power to grant clemency, presi dential press secretary Ronald L. Ziegler said, “That would not be a procedure that would be taken at this time.” Galley’s lawyer called the life imprisonment penalty “the lesser of two evils.” Spring Fling Summer fashions emphasized By SUE DAYIS With the intimate atmosphere of your own private showing, the Host and Fashion Committee presented Spring Fling, spring and summer clothes for both playing and partying. The clothes shown were from four Bryan-College Station stores: Beverly Braley, Britt’s, Collegiate Shop and Lester’s. Mam’selles modeled the fashions on a stage set in the center of the Ballroom of the Memorial Student Center. The traditional bikini was shown as a new fashion in three- piece sets. These consisted of the usual bikini with a long matching skirt. Bikinis also turned up in new material, like patent with a fringe skirt. Hotpants are the latest fashion and many variations on this theme were shown, everything from outfits to wear to the beach to evening wear. For casual dress, one and two-piece outfits were modeled with contrasting belts. Some had a tunic top so that the outfit was almost like a pant-dress. A yellow chiffon party dress was shown. It had a slit up the front, revealing yellow sequined hot pants. Navy and brown seem to be the most popular colors this spring and many outfits of these colors were modeled. Most of the pantsuits had tunic tops of con trasting colors, some of which could double as dresses. One out fit had a tunic with a monk-type hood which could be worn up or down. For evening a black lace pantsuit with a black satin bow was shown. One of the prettiest fashions this year is the long shirt dress. These make use of the wide belt in almost every outfit. One such dress had a navy top, a huge red patent leather belt and a navy plaid skirt with red ric-rac. A brown peasant blouse worn off the shoulders was shown with a floor-length skirt of lace over brown. The peasant style is still very popular as several of the outfits demonstrated. Especially pretty was a short black peasant dress with embroidery on the sleeves and hem. A Mexican style wedding dress concluded the show. This dress featured a low square neck with a small blue ribbon that encircled the empire waist and sleeves which were puffed from the el bow down. Needs development ESP not unusual, Cayce says By STEVE DUNKELBERG Battalion Staff Writer Everyone has the power of ESP, it just has to be developed, Dr. Charles Thomas Cayce, grandson of the controversial late psychic Edgar Cayce, said Tuesday night at the Great Is sues presentation, “ESP—Para psychology and the New Age.” Cayce, also a member of the Association for Research and En lightenment (ARE), explained that ESP consists of three cate gories: telepathy, the ability to *«nd or receive thoughts from °ue person to another; clairvoy ance, the ability to perceive situ ations by relating to matter rath- »than thoughts; and precogni tion, the ability to predict the future. In explaining how a person ac quires ESP, Cayce said many are just naturally attuned to what he termed the “Universal Laws.” “Every change in living mat ter,” Cayce explained, “is record- ad in another dimension. This ihmension can be tapped by peo ple with psychic ability.” For those that are not born ^th a natural attunement, Cayce fontinued, they may develop sud- Oen psychic abilities after a psy chological or physical trauma or w illness, especially an illness of the spine or brain. As far as meditation goes, Cayce said, as far as he knew, it required no special discipline of meditation, as long as it was in line with the universal laws.” Dream interpretation is used by an individual, Cayce ex plained, to find out more about his inner-self and to explore his personality. The small groups also help along this line. Cayce makes no claims to in heriting his grandfather’s natu ral ability but said he is working on developing his powers through the program he outlined. Edgar Cayce, Dr. Cayce’s grandfather, first exhibited his ESP ability as a youth, his grandson explained, after suffer ing for a long time from a laryn gitis condition that doctors could not cure. Cayce went to a traveling hyp notist, who put him into a hyp notic trance. Before the hypno tist could begin to ask questions, the young Cayce began answer ing. He eventually told the hyp notist to tell him to increase the supply of blood to the neck through post - hypnotic sugges tion, which the hypnotist did. The readings of Edgar Cayce, so called because Cayce felt he was reading the “book of life” when he went into a trance, have become the basis for many hy potheses about ESP, Cayce said. The ARE tests these hypotheses. The ARE’s main function how ever is to test people who believe they have ESP abilities and, in the event they do, it gives sug gestions for the use of their abilities. Easing marijuana penalty for first offender urged Bunking is a pleasure at First B*nk & Trust By DOUG GIBBS Punishment for the first of fense of possession of marijuana should be a misdemeanor, Texas Rep. Raul Longoria of Pharr said Thursday, not a felony. Longoria urged a noon Political Forum audience to support legis lation co-sponsored by him that would change the law. House Bill 549, as it is termed, is co-authored by Rep. Mike Mon- crief of Fort Worth. Presently in the House Crim inal Jurisprudence Committee, it would set the first-time posses sion sentence at a minimum of 10 days, to a maximum of two years. According to Longoria, the cur rent sentence is two years to life. “Immaturity, curiosity or just getting caught with a friend who dares you to smoke pot does not rate a prison sentence," said Longoria. “Everyone should be allowed one mistake.” Longoria declined commenting on the chances of the bill getting out of committee, but added “it’s just a matter of time.” Most people are against the bill because they don’t understand it, he con tinued. “I’m not for legalizing mari juana," Longoria cautioned. “I don’t know if it hurts a person. But arguments against mari juana are no basis for arguing against my legislation. I’m con cerned that it affects the future of a young person.” Longoria said that federal leg islation to change the first offense to a misdemeanor is pending, and his measure is “just to avoid doubts on the matter.” After presenting the over 150 persons present with the reason ing behind his bill, Longoria opened it up for questions. Most of them concerned one thing: the legalizing of marijuana. H-B. 549 is not the only con troversial legislation Longoria has sponsored. Another, also co sponsored by Moncrief, allows persons between the ages of 13 and 21 to commit themselves to a doctor for treatment of drug abuse. The previous law required a doctor to obtain parental con sent or he could be held crimi nally responsible. Longoria, now i n his sixth term as the representative from the Pharr area, said “it is time we wake up and realize some laws are wrong, and change them.” Postal gripes get response WASHINGTON <A>) — The new Postal Service replied Wednes day to complaints about mail de liveries in North and West Tex as, defending some actions but conceding other complaints were valid. Rep. Graham Purcell, D-Tex., who had asked for investigation of postal complaints, said he was satisfied with some of the changes resulting from the complaints. “As a result of the investiga tion,” Purcell said, “I think we’ve made some headway.” Ho said that Postmaster Win- ton Blount promises service equal to or greater than that which preceded start of the Postal Serv ice. “They’ve still got a way to go,” Purcell added. He said Saturday service has been restored at the main post office windows in Wichita Falls, as a result of complaints. “I am concerned that a num ber of issues have not been re solved,” Purcell added, “such as the inadequate handling of special delivery mail.” Galley also was ordered dis missed from the service, where he had earned awards for gal lantry in Vietnam and a Purple Heart for combat wounds. His monthly pay of $773.10 was or dered forfeited. The sentence carries the pos sibility of parole after 10 years. An appeal of the sentence is automatic and is expected to take a year or more. After the sentencing, Galley was taken under guard to the Ft. Benning stockade where he has been held since his conviction Monday of premeditated murder at My Lai. Galley could have been con demned to death. His conviction had stirred a nationwide furor and letters of encouragement by the armload had arrived during the day addressed to the defend ant. “You’ll find no case in military justice that has torn America apart like this case has torn America apart,” Latimer told the six-man military jury before it retired Tuesday afternoon to be gin deliberating the penalty to be assessed against Galley. Members of the jury were tight-lipped as they left the courthouse. Galley left the courthouse for the stockade flanked by military policemen. He saluted a silent crowd of about 150 spectators across the street. One woman in a red slacks suit shouted, “They crucified him.” A spokesman for Ft. Benning said there were no plans at pres ent to move Galley elsewhere. But Latimer predicted Galley would end up in the disciplinary barracks at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan. “in a hurry.” The panel spent about six hours to assess a life sentence. They needed a majority vote of five to one. A death penalty would have required unanimous agreement. Galley, 27, was the first Amer ican to be convicted in the long- delayed aftermath of My Lai, where American infantrymen turned upon unresisting Vietna mese civiilans after failing to flush the assigned enemy, the crack 48th Viet Cong battalion. The defendant’s attractive red-haired girlfriend, Ann, in slacks and sweater, was in the packed courtroom to hear the decision. She had no comment afterward. Earlier she had talked privately with Galley in advance of the sentence and reported, “He’s hopeful.” The jury sent word to trial judge Col. Reid Kennedy that it had agreed upon a sentence shortly after its return from lunch at 1:20 p.m. Kennedy scheduled a courtroom announcement of the verdict for 2:30 p.m. Before he took the notification of sentence, Kennedy thanked the jurors, saying “I know" how combat Army officers you must have agonized over your decision in this case. Kennedy then directed Galley to rise and the defendant walked between his attorney to a posi tion in front of the jury box. There he managed a wobbly sa lute, his mouth slack. As he had done 48 hours earli er with the guilty verdict, it was Ford’s lot to read the sentence to Galley. He was sentenced as follows: “To be confined at hard labor for the length of your natural life. “To be dismissed from the service. “To forfeit all pay and allow ances.” Pass -fail regis tra lion planned for late April By FRAN ZUPAN Battalion Managing Editor Students may want to think during the Easter holidays about whether they want to sign up for a pass-fail course during pre registration the last week in April, Senate Recording Secre tary Bill Hartsfield who worked on the pass-fail proposal last fall, said. Class schedules for the fall will be available a week before preregistration, and pass-fail courses will be designated as such in it, Academic Vice Presi dent Horace R. Byers said. Courses offered on a pass-fail basis will be of a broad cultural nature not requiring the student to have an in-depth knowledge of the subject matter, Hartsfield said. Some science and technical courses will also be offered. Requirements and regulations of the pass - fail system estab lished by the Academic Council are as follows: Juniors and seniors with a minimum overall grade point ra tio of 2.4 will be permitted to take a total of six credit hours of electives during their academic career at A&M on a pass - fail basis as partial requirement for their degrees. They must state intention to re gister on a pass-fail basis at initial registration. No change in the basis on which grades will be recorded can be made on offi- cia l transcripts. Hours for which a student re ceives a “D” or above shall not be included in the computation of the student’s semester or cu mulative grade point ratio. A failing grade will be computed as 0.0 grade points per credit hour. Pass.fail course hours will not be included in the fifteen hours re quired in the designation of “dis tinguished student.” Students who transfer to A&M must have earned at least 30 hours of credit here before tak- ln g a course on a pass-fail basis. A student must have written a PPi'oval from his academic ad- visor or department head in or- ^ er to take a pass-fail course. Colleges may refuse to accept students on a pass-fail basis for cour S es requiring a prior in- depth knowledge of the subject. Those students who do not sign up during these times will lose any priority they might have ha d, and will be limited to a very re strieted number of rooms from which to choose. Any student who signs up for a ro om and for some reason fails to pre-r«gister during the pre- scribed period will have his room cancelled, unless pre-registration has been blocked by his academic advisor.
