Today, the all-purpose roller has been replaced with rollers of all sizes and shapes, affording such a multiplicity of choices that the purchaser is likely to be bewildered when making a selec tion. Fortunately, some manu facturers have taken to labeling Attention Seniors Vanity Fair Applications are available at the Student Publications Office, Room 217. Flap pockets $7.98 pr. each roller to advise the buyer what the product is made of and what its beet usage is. Roller covers are made of mo hair, lambskin and many kinds of synthetics. They also come in various fiber lengths, producing what generally are called short, medium and long “naps.” If the particular roller that catches your eye does not carry a label describing its uses, the rule-of- thumb to follow is that the rougher the surface to be paint ed, the longer the nap of the roller should be. Thus, a short- napped roller is for smooth sur faces, such as plaster and dry wall; the medium nap for light stucco and fairly smooth con crete; and the long nap for heavy stucco, brick, rough concrete and cement or cinder block. Mohair is especially good for enamels and varnishes, lambskin is fine for most oil paints, but not enamels or latexes. Syn thetics of good quality work well with all kinds of paints. The principle is the same as with paint brushes: if you are putting your own labor into a paint job, it is foolish to use poor quality rollers to save a dollar or so. To get the best results with a roller, certain fundamentals must be observed. The roller should be loaded by dipping it into the paint tray and then removing the excess by rolling it over the higher and drier surfaces of the tray. On vertical surfaces, the first stroke should be upward, then downward, then crosswise. Use light, even strokes. By SUE DAVIS Battalion Women’s Editor Many people think that all cakes are various amounts of flour, water and a few eggs all thrown together. Sometimes you add a couple of other ingredients, but that is the basic recipe, right? And when you use a cake mix from a package, there’s not much you can do to it, right again? If you agree with the two state ments above, turn in your chef’s hat. Creating a cake can be one of the most fun and unique things you can do in your kitchen. And if you think the fun stops when you use a mix from a package, you’re quite wrong. An original cake can be made from scratch or by adding some thing extra to your cake mix. This cake is my favorite be cause it is made with Dr. Pepper. It turns out like a spice cake and is very moist. All it needs is: 1V4 cups boiling Dr. Pepper 1 cup quick-cooking oats i/ 2 cup shortening 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 cup brown sugar 2 eggs U/ 3 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon of salt 1 teaspoon soda 1/2 teaspoon salt Pour the boiling Dr. Pepper over the oats and stir. Let it stand for 15 to 20 minutes. Cream the shortening. Add the sugars gradually, creaming well. Add the eggs, beating until mixture is fluffy. Sift the flour with the salt, soda, and nutmeg, mixing well. Add this to the creamed mixture. Add the oatmeal mix ture and mix thoroughly. Pour into a greased and floured pan, 9x9. Bake at 375° 40 to 45 minutes. A deliciouse topping can be made by mixing together Vs cup melted butter, y 2 cup brown sugar, V4 cup light cream and 1 cup finely grated coconut. For a really great coffee cake, you should try this recipe I bor rowed from my room-mate. It’s a Sour Cream Cake and it will stay moist forever. For the cake, you need: 3 cups granulated sugar 1 cup shortening 6 eggs V4 teaspoon baking soda 3 cups flour i/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup sour cream 2 teaspoons vanilla N Preheat the oven to 300°. Cream the sugar and shortening to gether. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. Sift the flour, salt and soda together and add it to the batter. Mix in sour cream and vanilla. For the topping, you simply mix together 2 tablespoons cocoa, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 2 table spoons cinamon and 14 cup of nuts. Now pour half the batter into a lightly greased and floured angel food cake pan. Sprinkle half the topping in and then pour in the rest of the batter. After sprinkling with the remainder of the topping, bake for iy 2 to 2 hours. The top will crack. Cool and remove from pan. If you think of mayonnaise as just something to put on your hamburger, think again. A Choc olate Mayonnaise Cake can be a real conversation piece at a party. The ingredients are: April 1, 1971, and continuing tnrough May 7, 1971. The rings will be returned to the Registrar’s Office to be delivered on or about June 23. 1971. The ring clerk is on duty from 8:00 a. m. to 12:00 noon, Monday through Friday, of each week. H. L. Heaton, Dean Admissions and Records SPRING AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS. Bake at 350° about 30 minutes or until the cake springs back when touched. Cool, then remove from the pans. So now you are wondering what you can do with a package of cake mix. How about turning a package of yellow cake mix into a Sugar Crusted Maple Cake? All it takes is: I'/s cups water 3 eggs 14 cup granulated sugar Vz cup maple-flavored syrup 1 package yellow cake mix Grease and flour a 10-inch Bundt pan. In a large mixer bowl, combine the dry cake mix, water and eggs. Blend and beat as directed on package. Bake at 350° for 35 to 40 minutes or until done. In a small saucepan, heat the sugar and the syrup until the mixture boils and the sugar is melted. While the baked cake is still in the pan, pour the hot syrup mixture over it. Remove from pan within five minutes. Serve this delicious cake warm or cold. Did you ever think of combin ing cake mix and frosting mix? This is the first cake I’ve made at our apartment that was eaten quickly. It is appropriately called Berry Scrumptious Cake. It calls for: 1 package strawberry frosting mix 14 cup lukewarm water •4 cup butter or margarine, softened 1 package strawberry cake mix 2 egg whites IVs cups water Grease and flour a 13 x 9-inch pan. In a small bowl, blend frosting mix, >4 cup water and butter. Beat as directed on the package. Measure !4 cup of the prepared frosting for use in the cake; set the remainder aside. In a large mixer bowl, blend the cake mix, 14 cup frosting, 2 egg whites and I1/3 cups water. Beat as directed on package. Pour this into the prepared pan. Bake at 350° for 35 to 40 minutes or until done. Cool completely. Frost with the remaining frosting. Chains used now in decorating home By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Chains are becoming as stylish in home decorating as they are in the fashion wardrobe. In love with the chains theme, one girl has brought the idea full circle. She has covered one wall with an enormous black and white poster of a woman’s head, and she has decorated the neck with oodles of hardware store chains. It is a striking idea with lots of spring-offs. For exam ple, how about a lion poster with the lion on a chain. Or you might put a tiny mouse at the end of a long, long chain on a blank wall. Chains are used as decoration on standing screens. One girl decorated an ordinary burlap screen, draping chains she had painted over each section of it. Not inexpensive, she says, but she considers the effect well worth the investment. A low shelf may be suspended from the ceiling on chains to hold stereo, hi-fi, television. This fun idea is workable providing the chains are attached properly to the ceiling joist which will give good support. And the idea can make a cozy entertaining niche out of a corner of a room. You should check with the hardware store on the working load limit of the chains you plan to use. The smallest size of sash chain, No. 8 is said to have a working load limit of 75 lbs. Twelve 8 ft. lengths weigh approximately 4 pounds. You could use the hanging chain idea in a buffet shelf ar rangement, but you should first anchor the shelf to the wall. It will give stability and you can have the stylish chain effect. Chains are being used at the windows of bathrooms—Frances Lee Kennedy of Palm Beach uses them. She also likes beads used for the same purpose. In New York, interior design er Virginia Frankel has used a great many chains of different sizes and metals as a room di vider in a kitchen, dinette area. A similar idea may be done by fastening a 1 by 1 inch board with nails every 16 inches to the ceiling joist. Chains are sus pended from cup hooks attached to the ceiling 1 by 1.
