Page 6 College Station, Texas Thursday, March 17, 1960 THE BATTALION Eighth inning Comeback Gives Cadets 12-4 Victory Over Texas Lutheran Stars Honored J. L. Morgan, representing Look magazine, as District VI stars. Broussard was the presents Wayne Lawrence and Carroll team’s leading scorer and Lawrence led in Bruossard with certificates for being chosen rebounds. The Aggie baseball team turned the eighth inning into a scoring marathon yesterday as they trimmed the Texas Lutheran Bull dogs, 12-4. Byron Barber, Aggie left fielder, was the man who put the Cadets back in the game with his score tying homer in the seventh. Dick Hickerson and Joe Burt stepped out of their hitting slump to account for three hits each. Hickerson had a double and two singles while Burt connected for three one baggers. When the Ags came to bat in the eighth inning the score was tied 4-4, but not for long as the Cadets pounded the horsehide for eight hits and eight runs. Errors played a big part on the Texas Lutheran team as they chalked up six for the day com pared to one for the Farmers. Yesterday was the first time all season the Ags have been able to score the men that got on base. The 12 runs were scored on 15 hits. Olen Jordan started on the mound for the Cadets and was re lieved in the fifth by David Pit- cock who was credited with the win. Jack Boeder took over for Pitcock in the eighth. Yesterday’s win evened the score for the Ags in the won-loss col umn. They have beaten the Bull dogs twice and lost to Sam Hous ton and Rice. Saturday will mark the opening of conference play for the Farm ers as they meet Southern Meth odist on Kyle Field at 2 p.m. Freshman Baseball Season Opens Today in Corsicana Coach Gary Herrington loaded up his 1960 Fish baseball hopefuls this morning and headed for Corsi- ca.na to meet Navarro Junior Col lege in the first game of a 12- game schedule. With a few days of sunshine this week Herrington has been able to get a lot of work done. He said the Fish were much improved over last week. Herrington said they would be •>ut to win the game, but the main purpose would be to see what his team can do. The Singley Twins from' Okla- CHS Tigers Place Two on All-District Humbles Wildcats and the A&M Consolidated Tigers each placed three cagers on the District 21-AA Alp-District teams picked last weekend in Hempstead. Bruce Thompson of A&M, Cook Swanson of Navasota, and Larry Brown of Humble, all senior per formers, were the only three un animous selections from the panel of five coaches. Humble’s Hershel Archer and Jim MacDougald of Cy-Fair rounded out the first team.. Thompson and Archer were honorable mention All-Staters. The Bengals copped two more places on the second team as jun ior guard P. D. Gandy and senior Kelly Parker headed the list of Joey Brown of Humble, Shelton Boone of Navasota and Chester Markwardt of Bellville. Honorable mention went to Lloyd Long, a Humble freshman, Cal Swearingen of Bellville, Cy-Fair’s Lawrence Kubiak and Humble’s Roy Smith. Humble took the crown with an 8-0 21-AA record and advanced as far as the Region III finals before Belton downed the ’Cats. The Ti gers took second spot with a 5-3, ahead of Cy-Fair, Bellville and Navasota in that order. Next year the Bengals will com pete against Rockdale, Hearne, Cameron and Caldwell in District 19-A A. homa City are both slated to draw starting roles for the Fish. Ed will be the starting pitcher and Jack will be at third. Either Bobby Collins of Liberty Bill Puckett of Oklahoma City will be behind the plate. Each of three pitchers will prob ably go three innings, said Her rington. Besides Singley, Jerry Warren of Galveston and Mike Spence of Dallas will round out the pitching staff. The infield will be composed of Reggie Richardson of Beaumont at first, Jerry Carter of Fort Worth at second, Singley at third and Terry Cobb of Beaumont at short stop. Outfield positions wil be held down by Bill Musemeehe of Hous ton or Oliver Aldrich of Edinburg in left, Ray Hall of Fort Worth in center and George Carroll of Col lege Station or Bro Jackson of Houston will be in right field. Besides being the Fish’s first game it will also be Herrington’s first game as freshman coach. Navarro usually has a top notch team and should prove quite a test for the Cadets. A return game will be played in College Station on March 22. A&M (11) Carroll, cf Houchin, cf Hickerson, lb Horton, lb Barber, If Wortham, c Chase, c C.
